Geography
Zahara de los Atunes is where one of the
last great beaches of Andalusia is preserved
without large urban assault. The beach
is about 8 km long and is of fine sand.
A wonderful view of the African coast can be seen from the beach. Its location, away from the congested areas,
and its optimum conditions has made it a tourist area. Tourists and those in the area with seasonal
homes of luxury, called Atlanterra, are becoming parts of Tarifa.
Business
Zahara’s economy is based almost exclusively on tourism, although it is
seasonal. There are still a certain amount of fishermen who fish for tuna in
the early summer, when the tuna are migrating.
The tuna fishing is of great quality and is usually allocated more to
the Japanese market and less on local consumption.
Demographics
The population census in 2008 had 1,300 inhabitants, while in summer it can
reach over 40,000 due to the large influx of tourists.
Gastronomy
Not surprisingly, the cuisine of the area is based on the sea, especially on the
Almadraba tuna.
Beaches
One of the main attractions of Zahara de los Atunes is its beach, which is not
surprising since you can enjoy the beautiful sunset and clearly see the African
continent.
The beach called Playa de Cabo de la Plata is
more than 7 km in length and comprised of fine golden sand. Its crystal clear waters stretch from the village of Zahara
de los Atunes to Cape
Grace, covering the
entire nucleus and Zahara Atlanterra. As if this were not enough, it is one of
the few places where the green of nature blends with the blue sea.
The beach Cabo de la
Plata, called "Beach of the Germans” by zaharenos, is notable because it
is completely free of tourist infrastructure. Overlooking the beach is the
Lighthouse Camarinal or "Light of Grace", which was built on a beacon
tower of the sixteenth century and inaugurated in 1989. From there you can
enjoy the beach Canuelo, which is about 500 meters long and in the military
field in the Natural
Park of the Strait.
Playa del Faro Canuelo is the substance of Camarinal
Other Zahara beaches are Playa de Canillo, which is the location not only of
many birds but also the military leadership, Barbate Beach, and Zahara de los
Atunes Atlanterra, built in the area called Atlanterra.
It was a very common sight in the early days of Zahara de los Atunes for the
wind and hot, swirling sand to make the landscape even more savage
Zahara de los Atunes is a parish in the municipality of Barbate
near Tarifa in Cadiz province, Spain. Its
specific location is 36 ° 8'10 "N 5 ° 50'45" W / 36.13611, -5.84583.
Zahara de los Atunes is located southwest of the province, near the Strait of Gibraltar and 70 km from Cadiz Capital.
The roots of Zahara de los Atunes can be traced back to the time of the
Phoenicians but it wasn’t until the sixteenth century that there was something
resembling a town. As its name suggests,
the origin of the town comes from tuna and it is one of the major traps of Andalusia tuna. The trap is a traditional fishing gear
for tuna that was already in use during the Roman rule.
The inhabitants of Zahara de los Atunes are
called zahareno.
