This historic event took place in 1184 or 1183 BC, the Trojan War took place between the years 1194 and 1184 BC, about 3200 years ago.

Some archaeologists suggest that the true Gadir is located underneath the city as it is composed of features which are attributed to the ancient city. The name means City of the walled Gadir and as studies have shown Puerto de Santa María was walled.

El Puerto de Santa Maria is known as La Ciudad de los Cien Palacios, although the passage of time and neglect have led many of these elegant buildings to be left virtually in ruins. Proceeds from the trade with the Indies and Spanish America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw the establishment of trading houses designed for the needs of the large traders.

Located on the banks of the river mouth and Guadalete, the town's population in 2008 was 86000 inhabitants across 159 km ² and a population density of 500 persons per km ². Its geographical coordinates are 36 ° 36 'N, 6 º 13' W. Situated at an altitude of 6 km 21 km from the provincial capital of Cadiz and the town is part of the naval base of Rota.

There are a number of major projects in the city, such as building a second bridge, the reform of the old town hall and the remodelling of downtown.

A legend attributes the founding of the city to an Athenian leader, Menesteo, after the Trojan War he founded the city that bore his name, Port Menesteo and in 711 the Muslims fought at the Battle of Visigothic Guadalete, which saw the entry of the Arabs in the peninsula.

The city became part of Muslim territory under the new name of Alcantara, Alcanate or Alcanatif which some researchers say was as a result of Puerto Salinas. In 1260, Alfonso X conquered the city and renamed it the Santa Maria del Puerto. Later the city name was changed to the now familiar  Puerto de Santa María.

El Puerto de Santa Maria is located in the Cadiz coast, inside the Bay of Cadiz, and south of the Sierra de San Cristobal, on the banks of the river mouth and Guadalete; near the towns of Sanlucar de Barrameda road A-2002, Jerez de la Frontera, Rota, Puerto Real, Cadiz and across the bay.

The same is for traditional and Portenos Portenas from Puerto de Santa María Cadiz or Port Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires Argentina, Argentina's capital now proudly retains the name of Portenos.

The first traces of settlement in Puerto de Santa María are the Lower Paleolithic sites of "The Aculadero" and in "Las Arenas" is another site of the Mesolithic period and next to the medieval tower of Dona Blanca there is an excavation of a Phoenician town whose history is tied to from the end of the ninth century and early eighth century until the end of the second century where there are ruins of the walls, cemeteries and housing from this place that was a key trade route.

El Puerto de Santa Maria is a town located in the Spanish province of Cadiz, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. According to legend, the city was founded by Menesteo an Athenian king who participated in the Trojan War.

When the war ended and he returned home, his throne was usurped and he was forced to emigrate. Navigating without destination he just went into the mouth of the river Guadalete and founded the city of Puerto Menesteo.
