In the second half of the twentieth century
the development of the beach area saw the rise of large housing estates and
hotels especially that of Barrosa, due to the increasing number of foreign
tourists seeking this coast for their holidays.
In the last decades of the twentieth century,
Chiclana is considered the largest tourist
destination of sun and beach in the province of Cadiz,
being the city with the largest number of hotels in Costa de la Luz.
Chiclana is one of the major tourist
destinations of Andalusia. Notable hotels of
four and five stars in the Novo Sancti Petri, as well as golf courses,
residential, shopping and entertainment venues that stretch across the beach of
Barrosa. Another of the hotels in the city is that the suburban Loma de Sancti
Petri, also located on the beach
of Barrosa.
The Sancti Petri beach has no hotels, but a
variety of entertainment, highlighting the various shops that are close to the
beach and the Yacht Club, where you can practice many water sports like surfing
or sailing.
Crafts
The town of Chiclana is internationally renowned
for the famous dolls, Marin won the First Prize in the World Munequería
Artística held in Krakow Poland.
The dolls crafted by entrepreneur Jose Marín Verdugo chiclanero and founder of
the Museum of Marin in 1928.
There are a great many of these hand made
dolls on exhibition and are recognised by their Spanish folk dress, especially
the flamenco costumes typical of the region of Andalusia.
These dolls were popular all over the world and became fashionable in Germany, United
Kingdom, France,
Italy
and other European countries.
Marin dolls became one of the most
characteristic ornaments of Spain
and were one of the most characteristics souvenirs of Spain embraced
by the world. Other sectors active in Chiclana are craftsmen forging iron,
ceramic art, decoupage and furniture produced in local factories.
Beaches
Sancti Petri beach is picturesque with the castle in the background and the
Promenade de la Barrosa is worth a stroll along.
Sancti Petri
The beach of Sancti
Petri has a length of two kilometres, located near the ancient
village of Sancti Petri almadrabero at the mouth of
the river of the same name. Today, this town has restaurants, bars and marinas
such as the Yacht Club, where you can practice many water sports such as
surfing and sailing to name a few.
Opposite this beach is the Castillo de Sancti
Petri, San Fernando, where according to legend
the Temple of Hercules Melkart was situated.
The town has always been considered a prime
site due to the natural climate and healthy waters. The prosperity lead to the
development of prime architectural neighbourhoods of sublime architectural
heritage. This grew eighteenth century due to trade with the Americas and the town became the
home of many wealthy merchants gaditanos.
La Barrosa
The La Playa de la Barrosa has a length of eight kilometres and is separated
from the beach of
Sancti Petri by a cliff.
This beach has an important tourism status highlights being the seafront, where
there are numerous restaurants and other entertainments.
The beach has obtained the Blue Flag status
given by the European Union to the beaches with good environmental management.
There is a hotel complex Novo Sancti Petri, a development of four hotels and
five star golf courses with malls and other buildings.
In some areas you can see remnants of defensive
walls, as Bermeja
Tower, built for the
Battle of Barrosa, which took place on March 5, 1811 during the Spanish War of
Independence.
