Cadiz has traditionally been a city dominated by sea-based development in
the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. However, the maritime trade
has declined over the years; fishing has entered a serious crisis due to the
loss of fishing privileges in the Saharan Bank off the coast of the Republic of Western Sahara
occupied by Morocco
and shipyards that are currently underused.
The decline in the ordering of ships and
boats and stiff competition from other shipyards has led to a decline in this
business. Unemployment has seen a shift toward tourism promoting beaches,
historical importance and hotel and house rentals. The city is undergoing a
remarkable comeback with rises in per capita income and the development of a
strong health and social services sector.
Cadiz can be distinguished by its beaches and festivals and a summer
evening eating tapas by the Barrio de La Vina.
Cadiz is considered the oldest city in the west with a rich
artistic and monumental heritage and is emerging as a major centre of cultural
and urban tourism.
The city has many restaurants, hotels and youth hostels. .
